They Will Listen

by Bhuvana Sri V

Bhuvana Sri’s poem is about those true friends who are always there for you in the darkest of times, and the joy of realising that you are not alone.

There is something so spectacular,
So intensely joyous,
(Something that makes you think
For days, months, years),
Groundbreaking and life-changing,
In the fact that
They will
Listen.

They will listen –

They will listen to you cry
And they will listen to you scream,
They will listen to your silence,
They will listen to you dream…

They will not close their eyes,
They will not shut their ears –
They will listen and listen,
And then stay right here;

And they will stay here,
By your side,

When there are flies in your mouth
And death in your head,
Rot in your lungs and
Bones on your bed –

They will still listen
And they will still stay,
When you fear the ghosts in your eyes
Will scare them away;

And they will stay by your side
Until the fog clears,
Until your hands stop shaking
And you’ve run out of tears,

And you are alone no more
(Well, you never were)
And the shadow passes,
Becoming a distant blur…

They will stay, even after,
And they will listen –
And there is something
So beautiful about that,
Something that shocks you
And stuns you,
But changes you
Forever –
You are not alone
(You never were) –
They are here,

And they will stay,
And they will
Listen.

  1. Loved it!
It. Is abstract! at the same time analytical in unfolding the essence of. friends around you..
I like the cynical ( you never were ) reminder that life is never without friends!!!!
The stanzas cascade down ……affirmatively unfolding the consciousness in you of the protective clinging that is taken for granted. !!
I’ve particularly taken keen note of the affirmative use of the word “will”.
Very refreshing …. Like a breath of fresh air.
    Truly beautiful!!!
