by ARTOHUS
Summertime is mostly characterized by harsh and unforgivable weather. In this poem, ARTOHUS explores the oppressive nature of summer and equates it with that of our present times.
A hot, fiery summer
The heat wandering in the plains
Like angry despots in search of dissent
Quelling each outburst with haughty oppression
The streets deserted of life
The neighbourhoods tranquilized into silence.
A hot, burning summer
The heat scorching our skins
Parching them, even our souls,
Everything burns – people, forests,
Courage, liberty, morality, honesty, humanity,
Leaving embers of spineless acquiescence.
A hot, lonely summer
The heat dividing the population
Some untouched in their air-conditioned cages
Others untouchable – singeing in the solitary streets
While hope straddles along an empty road
Stumbling upon some ephemeral mirages.
Somewhere, far away, the clouds roar
The sky lights up in mutiny
Somewhere the rains come
As piercing drops of grudge and rage
They drown away the tyrant torches in a deluge
Pacifying the famished souls of freedom.
ARTOHUS spends most of his time gazing at clouds, stars or maps. He is a 27-year-old dreamer from Kolkata who finds his peace in soulful strands of music, passionately stringed verses or the dreamy world of books. And at other times, he loves heading off to unseen destinations in search of solitude. You can read his blog here.
