A Castle for an Ancient Settler

by Bakul Banerjee

Early settlers in Iceland, particularly those who survived the extreme environment are fine examples of indomitable human spirit. Inspired by the basalt columns and caves created by major seismic upheavals in Iceland, Bakul Banerjee writes a poem.

The silent night simmers faintly
on the layer of sharp volcanic sand,
catching star light from arctic sky.
It is time to rest. She spreads out
her humble bedroll on the sand.

The jagged basalt roof of the cave
wraps itself over her tattered quilt.
Her breath erodes ancient stones.
It is time to sleep. She shuts her eyes
to retreat inside a warm oblivion.

The night moves eerie stone columns
around the cave to complete a castle
with gates and walls. Tides and gales
stay out. It is time to dream
of the lost love, lulled in a cradle of peace.
