They restrain confessing their love to each other worrying about a tragic heartbreak, in the process living with heartbreak every day. Jessu John writes a poem that captures the rasa, Kāruṇyam (Tragedy).[/box]In the quiet between us,
I know the depths of heartbreak,
That you and I
Will be broken
By an unspoken
Love.
It is either us or them,
Those others who weary us.
We speak the same language,
Yet why can we not utter
What we know?
In the solitary nights
Between your coming again,
I’m shattered by your silence.
If I may speak and unburden
A lifetime of my troubles,
I wonder how
You cannot trust me so.
Name your fears to me,
Let me undo them
One by one.
I know why you are waiting,
You know why I wait too.
The beauty
Of our quiet mutual intuitions
Is sometimes too painful
For words.
Do I desire to hurry my healing
If only to be special to you?
Yes, I do.
Yet, this restraint is needed,
You know it, I know it too.
There is a heartbreak
Waiting to happen,
And it happens everyday
You unravel the secrets of my pain,
And I, I long to know
The mysteries of yours.
There is a heartbreak
Looming over us,
Will our bond be blown apart by it?
Will I lose you to denial
Or disillusionment?
Will I be searching for you
In the darkness
Of a wrecked friendship?
Or will you be a warrior
And claim me
From the pits of our heartbreak
And make me yours forever?
