To My Daughter

by M.Mohankumar

An ageing father recalls fondly recalls the times with his daughter when she was a little girl. A poem by M. Mohankumar.

This evening –
my first time out
after the operation –
as you walk me
in the museum park,
holding my feeble hand,
I remember you
as a little chattering girl
catching my forefinger
and leading me on,
with a confident look,
along the gravelly path
of our long-lost garden –
and me behind you,
docile, but anxious
lest you should stumble
and fall, your mother
in the balcony,
the baby – your brother,
in her arms, looking on,
smiling wanly.

Mohankumar has published eight volumes of poetry in English, his latest collection being “Gleanings” which released in 2016.
